1. Roomba Q5 pro

The Q5 Pro and its sibling the more expensive Q7 Max Series, are among the most powerful robot vacuums we've tested. They are equipped with top-of-the-line motors which can generate up to 5,500 Pascals of suction force. Like other iRobots with premium features (including the most powerful model) they employ smart mapping to produce precise floorplans and avoid household obstacles such as cords and furniture leg. The robots also come with the feature of Carpet Boost which boosts its power when it detects dirt on the carpet.

Both the Q5 and Q7 Max Series get very good scores in our tests on floors that are bare and are particularly effective in cleaning pet hair. However, they do have some flaws that prevent them from being our top choice. One of the Q5's shortcomings is its navigation system doesn't include AI-powered obstacle avoidance. It's also prone to become stuck on socks and shoes and couldn't navigate rooms with lots of people well during our tests. It also doesn't come with an image sensor that lets it see the corners of the room.

It's still a great option for those who want to save money on a Roomba from iRobot and have a bare-floored home or office. It's also very quiet and can be used when you're at work or school. It lacks the edge-to-edge bare floor vacuuming feature that's available in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective in mopping. It is dependent on disposable wet wipes that don't stick well and isn't able to handle dried-on debris. The Q5 has a self-emptying cradle however. If you need to, the mopping pad can be changed for an awe-inspiring one in a matter of just a few seconds.

2. iRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba X30 is a compact, sleek vacuum cleaner that also has the ability to mop floors. The flex arm is great for getting under furniture that is low and along baseboards. It doesn't offer the same washboard performance as our other Editors' Choice picks, the Ecovacs Deebot Ozmo N8 Professional+ and the iRobot Combo j9+.

During testing, X30 Ultra was the quickest robot vacuum/mop that could sweep the entire house, with 66 per cent of its battery remaining. It also did a great job of cleaning a mix of floors and rooms that had various flooring types, such as certain area rugs. Its obstacle detection was great and it stayed clear of fake dog turds, socks, shoes and bundles of cables.

It's a bit more expensive than iRobot Combo v9+ or iRobot Roomba j9+ but it has superior suction and an onboard bin that automatically empties into the base. It also supports voice commands through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can even clean the floor after vacuuming, a feature that we've not seen on other robot vacuum/mop combinations.

4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with a lot of advanced features that will let you get rid of your chores. The smart robot cleaner makes use of LIDAR and structured lighting to create floor plans and spot obstacles. It can navigate more efficiently than its top competitors. It also comes with a front-mounted camera for real-time hazards detection but this wasn't foolproof in our tests and could be confused with power cords or obstructions.

The vacuum has a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to finish the job. It also has "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates how hard the vacuum works and alters the frequency of cleaning for different areas of the home according to the amount of dirt they are.

For larger houses, it's worth opting for a model with zone or spot cleaning modes that let you tell the robot to clean a particular area of your house via the app or via voice commands. If you have lots of furniture, a stair mode is also useful. For families that are busy recharge functions and resume feature that allows your robot vacuum to continue from where it left off can be very useful.

iRobot RX3

The RX3 is a more efficient cleaner than you'd expect from its price tag. It vacuums well and was able to remove 55% of debris in our tests. (It was second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mopses with a single pad that uses a reciprocating motion, which does a better job cleaning than the other robot mop cleaners we've examined. It's also self-sufficient, with a full-featured app and a self-emptying, washable base.

The iRobot application is designed to help you navigate the mapping process which collects information about your floorplan, as well as any "no go" areas you've marked on the map. It can be used to design cleaning schedules or to set up the spot-cleaning. You can also use it to prioritize the most soiled areas for better performance. The app comes with a variety of features, such as seasonal suggestions, custom mapping, and advanced cleaning robot mop and vacuum settings.

Its shape is more rectangular than most other robot vacuums, which means it can get to corners and under furniture more easily. It has an impressive 8000 Pascal suction as well as intelligent combs to remove pet hair. It also has the ability to create a spot-clean that intensely cleans a localized area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a more sleek and less expensive alternative to iRobot Roomba. It has a more attractive design, similar to Dolce & Gabbana. The twin cameras are shaped like cute eyes. It's good at vacuuming but is more prone to get caught on low thresholds and is a bit more noisy than the other top robot vacuums uk vacuums we've tried. It also has a less intuitive app and a small base station that doesn't double as an emptying bin.
