Item upgrades are a way to boost the stats of an item. Depending on the upgrade type, it may boost an item's Mark Level or Rarity and boost additional stats.

Upgrades to equipment in The War Within requires a specified number of Flightstones and Crests Each item comes with an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the price of the next item by a specified amount.

Item Level

When an item is upgraded, its basic stats are increased in value. This value is the total of all the leveled up perks (attack, magic attack and defense). The cost of upgrading items can be high depending on the upgrader and what kind of upgrade you decide to do. This is due to the number of perks that have to be modified to upgrade an item.

It can also be used as a gating requirement while queueing for raids, dungeons and scenarios. It is also used to determine a gating condition when waiting for dungeons, scenarios and raids, and to limit the amount of PvP gear a player can wear (since PvP is limited to an lower level). The average level of an item can be found on the character sheet.

The level of an item can help players compare the power of equipment when they decide to buy or sell. It's a sign of the damage and its quality. The level of the item can be used to compare items when looking at the inventory of a seller.

On PC, you can see the level of the item by pressing ALT or using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will show the full item description, including its ilvl. You can also locate it by hovering over an item and typing /itemlevel in chat.

There are several theories on how the calculation of the item's level is done. One theory says that the item level is determined by an equation that determines the value of an item's stats really are. It considers that different benefits are valued differently and that gems in the sockets increase the item level upgrade's value. This could result in an item's ilvl calculated, which is typically very close to Blizzards actual level of the item.

However, this isn't the only factor which can affect an item's ilvl because the size of the area the item is dropped into can alter the value of its stats, for example by adding an additional level to its crit rating or haste rating. This means that items dropped at higher levels will have more value than items dropped in lower-level instances.

Item Stats

The stats of an item can make or break an item for players. The game uses a lot of them in a variety of ways to encourage players to play with a variety of weapons, and also to stop one weapon from being "the best." The base stats of a weapon are increased by the weapon's stat modification which are then enhanced by the player's level.

Upgrades to the item add by increasing certain stats on the item. The rarity of an item level upgrade determines the cost of upgrading. A grey or white item, for example, will only be upgraded once however, items with rare tiers may be upgraded multiple times at higher costs.

Affixes are another way to alter the stats of an item. They are stat boosters that can be added by the player to an item. Affixes can provide the item extra damage, or add a unique ability to the item (such as reviving the dead or cutting down the cooldowns) or make the item unique by adding an additional name to the item.

All affixes can be being re-rolled right now by selecting them in the upgrade window, and pressing the green button. This process will cost the player a specific amount of gold and items that can be used to add to the upgrade gauge in the same manner as other rerolling options.

In addition to Rerolling affixes and rerolls, players can also choose which of the available stats they want to keep on an item when it is upgraded. The possible stat ranges for an item are determined by the level of the item, however all items are guaranteed to have at least 1 stat within the range, unless it is an item that is unique or a God roll from a boss in a raid.

Another thing that could change is the possibility to upgrade equipment without having to roll the affixes, or choose which stats to enhance. But, like base equipment, this would need to be done on a per-item basis and the interface for item comparison will not show all the stats that could be either lost or gained at the same time.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player boosts the probability of obtaining items as well as the properties created by loot and the intensity of these properties. However, it does not directly affect damage or ability to upgrade items. It provides players with the chance to upgrade equipment earlier in the game. This is particularly useful for early game runs, since players tend to prioritize defenses and weapon scaling over raw damage gains.

Luck can also boost the chances of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall chance of upgrading that increases with each item level and can be further increased through the use of an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.

Armor, shields and weapons can be made or spawn with the Luck property, with the default value of 40. These items can be upgraded with golden ingots, spined leather or oak boards (depending on the type of material used) to grant a further +40 Luck, or to increase the Luck of an item, up to 140.

Certain items, like the weapon with Hollow-infused components, can also be equipped to increase the damage dealt by any ability that causes damage by 5percent. These items can be bought from the shop, or they can be made using the correct ingredients.

Item Failure

Not all upgrades work. However, there are some cash shop items which allow players to increase their chance of success or stop them from losing an item if the upgrade fails.

The success rate of an upgrade is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the likelihood of successfully upgrading an item. This can be increased with Additional Materials or Special materials. The chance of success can only be increased by so much, and the chance that an upgrade will fail cannot exceed 100%..

The success of an can be affected by the luck of that item. Each item has a success rate of 25 percent, and every item with Luck increases the chance of success by 5%.

The item upgrade overlays are rendered above items in the inventory. This may block enchantment effects as well as other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
