Upgrades can boost the value of certain numeric stats on weapons, armor and rings. They also increase bonuses, such as damage from PvE and crit chance.

For example, a weapon with the upgrade template that is ending in % will gain an attack damage of 3% each time it upgrades (relative to its previous value).

The cost of upgrading an item is determined by the item's level. The cost rises with item's level.

Components

Upgrade components can be added to trinkets, weapons and armor to give them a stat boost or to add an additional effect. They can be obtained through crafting, purchasing from vendors, trading with other players or looting. Some upgrades can also be accompanied by special cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can be placed in equipment that has a slot for them; the item must have been at a minimum upgraded to blue level in order for the component to be used. Upgrade components, unlike other modifications, can only be applied only once. They are not able to be replaced or applied several times. Infusions and enrichments are a specific type of upgrade component that is used to upgrade non-amulet ascended or legendary equipment, as well as some of the back items that are not ascending. Infusions and enrichments can be obtained by salvaging ascended equipment or completing a mission in the Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall campaigns.

A prefix or suffix may be added to an upgrade, thereby changing the name of the item it is used on (for instance, 'Canthan Armor Insignia,' becomes Canthan Armor Minor Vigor). Certain upgrades boost the Mark Rarity or Level of an item, allowing players create stronger versions with less Upgrade crystals than they need to reach the same level using standard methods.

A 'boost' upgrade can change the attack or defence attributes of the weapon or armor. These upgrades can be made using the Portative Forging Station once the player has completed the cutscene, and defeats the Crazed mechanic. They can also be dropped by enemies while upgrading other gear or purchasing them from the cash store for 500 upgrade crystals each.

The player can get a maximum of five boost upgrades at one time; each upgrade increases the probability that a higher-level version of the item will be available in the next reset. This gives players a reason to upgrade their gear even if they are unsure what will be improved after an update.

The process of upgrading an item could be expensive and it's possible that the item will become obsolete or even break when the upgrade fails. Upgrade Crystals and assist powders are also destroyed if the upgrade fails. Cash shop items can be used to decrease or eliminate the possibility of failure. Some upgrades also offer the player a bonus if they are reinserted.

Glyphs

Glyphs are upgrade parts that can be placed in special sockets on the Paragon Board. Glyphs can boost the performance of nodes within a radius, including any pre-existing affixes. Glyphs can be upgraded in a variety of ways. We recommend upgrading them as fast as you can to level 15.

In the final game you'll often discover that the best way to improve your gear is by placing Glyphs. They are the only upgrade components that can be upgraded to level 15 and offer a significant boost to your power on the Paragon Board.

Glyphs, the only upgrade component which can be removed without restriction and then replaced with no restrictions, are the most common. Only legendary equipment can be salvaged and rebuilt with the aid of a Black Lion Salvage Kit.

The value of each Glyph is displayed when you select it in your inventory. You can replace it with another Glyph that is the same or higher rank to increase the value of the Glyph.

Leveling

The new item comes with its own set bonus. This can be a downside since the item may become more expensive even if you do not need it.

If the player has enough tokens they can roll the upgrade of their item. This causes the item to be traded for a new one, which will have the level 1 base, and a totally different set of bonus bonuses. This is a good idea however it should not be used frequently as it could waste resources.

Whenever an item is upgraded the upgrades are applied in order from the lowest to the highest.
