Upgrades boost the value of certain numeric statistics on armor, weapons and rings. Upgrades can also boost bonuses like Crit chance and PvE Damage.

Components

Upgrade components can be incorporated into weapons, armor and trinkets in order to give them a stat boost or to add an additional effect. They can be acquired through crafting, purchasing from vendors trading or looting. Certain upgrades come with special cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components are only available to devices that have slots. The item must be at least upgraded to blue before the component can be applied. Upgrade components, unlike other mods can only be applied once. They are not able to be replaced or applied multiple times. Infusions and enrichments are a kind of upgrade component that can be used to upgrade non-amulet legendary or ascending equipment, as as some non-ascended items. Enrichments and Infusions can be obtained by salvaging ascended equipment or completing a quest in the Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall campaigns.

A prefix or suffix may be added to an upgrade, changing the name of the item it's applied to (for example 'Canthan Armor Insignia,' becomes Canthan Armor Minor Vigor). Some upgrades increase an item's Mark Level, or Rarity, allowing players to make stronger versions of the equipment with fewer Upgrade Crystals than is required to achieve the same level of upgrade through normal methods.

A boost upgrade can alter the defense or attack attributes of a weapon or armor. These upgrades can be crafted from the Portative Forging Station once the player has completed the cutscene, and defeats the Crazed Mechanical. They can also be dropped by enemies when upgrading other gear or purchasing them from the cash shop for 500 upgrade crystals.

Each upgrade increases the chance that a better-quality version of an item will be revealed at the next reset. This gives players the opportunity to upgrade their gear even if they are unsure what can be improved upon a reset.

The process of upgrading an item can be expensive and it's possible that the item will be obsolete or even break in the event that the upgrade fails. Upgrade Crystals and assist powder are also destroyed if the upgrade fails. Cash shop items can be used to minimize or eliminate the possibility of failure. Certain upgrades also provide a bonus if they are reinserted.

Glyphs

Glyphs can be used to upgrade the Paragon Board by placing them in sockets with special functions. Glyphs increase the power of all nodes in the area around them as well as existing affixes on equipment. Whenever an item level upgrade is upgraded the upgrades are applied from lowest to highest. This means that the weapon that is upgraded increases its crit chance that it will be applied prior to any damage from attacks increases. The amount of resources required to upgrade an item is based on the rarity rating and number of upgrade slots. The cost of upgrading equipment that is not premium is equal to its base value.
