WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades give you boosts in certain stats. Each upgrade boosts the level of the item by +3. A random substat is also increased with every upgrade.

Upgraded gear is generally more valuable, unless it is not required by nature (like FB sorc shields) or a high stat variance (like eth Titan weapons). The latter are less valuable from upgrading due to the requirement to roll for a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader enables players to upgrade their gear to a higher item level by providing the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be made on any type of armor or weapons. However, the item upgrade that is used for the upgrade will remain in use for a long time and will not be able to be used again. Upgrades can be applied to Enchantments.

The upgrader is located in all major cities and can be visited anytime to upgrade your gear. It is recommended that you visit the upgrader once every few weeks to keep your equipment up to date.

The cost of upgrading will depend on the current level of the gear being upgraded but they will always be less expensive than buying new equipment from other sources. Upgrades such as upgrading a Benthic chest to the level of ilvl385 will cost you 20 recycle points. A similar item will cost you 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used to purchase weapons, armor, tools, and accessory upgrades. They can be bought by players through NPCs that sell upgrades to items in exchange for different currencies, and can also be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be applied to any weapon, tool or armor. The button will show a preview of an item's next upgrade level, when there are enough materials.

The cost of upgrading is based on the slot of the item and current item upgrades level, with weapons costing more than bracers or gloves, for example. Each upgrade costs 15 Flightstones and a few crests, with some upgrades offering discounts to reduce the cost of Flightstones or crests used. After an item has been upgraded to a certain amount it is able to be downgraded and sold to the upgrader at a lower price.

Upgraders for items can be found at many locations, including the main island as well as some outposts. The NPCs offer an upgrade coupon and a chance to obtain an entirely new recipe. The upgrade discount increases depending on the amount of items that are being upgraded. It can also be boosted by having players complete specific achievements or complete quests.

Contrary to Cromwell in Baldur's Gate II, there is no upgrader for items at the beginning of Icewind Dale. The NPCs who can facilitate upgrades are only accessible via a variety of ways. This is both a benefit as well as an issue.

In Season 3, the upgrade system was altered a bit, with several new features added. Once a player has upgraded to a certain item level for an armor slot upgrading other items to the same item level, will cost less. This applies regardless of whether the items are from a different set of gear.

The amount of Valorstones required for upgrades is reduced, and the discount is available across all accounts. The amount of Harbinger Crests required for upgrades is reduced too, but it is only available after certain milestones are reached.

Crests

When upgrading equipment in WoW players have a few choices. Flightstones are an Item level Upgrade that is available to everyone for upgrading. Crests are more special and are used for specific item upgrader mod level upgrades. Crests are the main component of the Dragonflight gear progression system introduced in 10.1, and come in 4 ranks.

First, you should know that Crests are only available to equipment of a certain rank. Each rank has an upgrade path that is different. The most basic and straightforward upgrade route costs 15 crests while the more complex one may require as many as 20 crests, based on the type of equipment being upgraded.

Players can earn crests through finishing content at the appropriate level. This could mean doing outdoor activities or taking on dungeons and raids of all difficulty levels to obtain equipment of lower tier or Mythicbosses for raids, or dungeons with heroic difficulty for endgame gear. The crests can later be exchanged at an upgrader NPC like Cuzolth in Dornogal or Vaskarn in Valdrakken, for the appropriate upgrade pathways and steps.

The new currency system isn't too difficult to use, but it brings some changes to the upgrade process. For instance, when a piece of equipment reaches the highest level of upgrading for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic) it won't require Flightstones to be upgraded. This change is designed to allow players to get their gear up to the highest possible ilvl for all their characters instead of relying only on seasonal loot.

Another significant change is that crests only have one usage, so it's important to use them properly. For instance, it's a good idea use all of your Whelpling-rank crests on the top gear you have available, and then keep Drake and Wyrm crests for the next round of upgrades you plan to make. This is especially true for items such as trinkets and rings that take up several slots. The discount on the account will only apply when all slots on the character are filled with high-quality gear.
