WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades give a guaranteed boost to certain stats. Each upgrade boosts the item level by +3. A random substat is also increased with each upgrade.

The upgraded gear typically has a higher trade value, unless it has inherently low requirements (like the FB sorc's shield) or very high stat variance (like Eth titan weapons). The latter see less value from upgrading due to the necessity to roll to get a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader allows players to upgrade their gear by transferring the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be applied on any type of armor or weapons. However, the item that is used to upgrade items will be consumed for the duration of time and cannot be used again. Upgrades can also be applied to enhancements.

You can upgrade your equipment anytime by visiting the upgrader in any major city. To ensure that your equipment is up-to-date, it is recommended that you visit the upgrader every few weeks.

Upgrades can cost more based on the level of the Item level Upgrade but they will always be less expensive than purchasing new equipment. Upgrades such as upgrading a Benthic chest to ilvl385 will cost you 20 recycle points. Buying a similar item upgrade will cost you 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used for weapon, armor, tool and accessory upgrades. Players can purchase them from NPCs of item upgraders for various currencies. They can also find them in random treasure lists. Once an upgrade has been purchased, it can be applied to any weapon, tool, or armor with an button, which will show a preview of the item at the next upgrade level in the event that the player has enough materials.

The cost of upgrades varies based on the slot of the item and current item level and the weapon's price is higher than bracers or gloves, for example. Each step costs 15 Flightstones and a variety of crests, with some upgrades offering discounts to lower the cost of the Flightstones or crests that are used. Once an item level upgrade has been upgraded to a certain amount it is able to be degraded and sold back to the upgrader for a lower amount of both currencies.

A lot of locations offer upgraders for items in addition to the main island and a few outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade coupon and a chance to obtain the latest recipe. The discount on upgrades increases according to the number of items being upgraded. It can also be increased by requiring players to complete specific achievements or quests.

Unlike Cromwell in Baldur's Gate II, there is no upgrader for items available in the beginning of Icewind Dale. The NPCs who are able to facilitate upgrades are only available via a variety of ways. This is both a benefit and an issue.

In Season 3 the upgrade system was altered a bit, with some new features added. After the player has upgraded to a specific level for an armor slot upgrading other items to the same level will cost less. This is even if the items are from another set of equipment.

The amount of Valorstones required for upgrades is reduced, and the discount is account-wide. The amount of Harbinger Crests required to upgrade is cut as well, but is only available once certain milestones are achieved.

Crests

Players have several choices when it comes to upgrading their equipment in WoW. Flightstones are an item that is available to all players for upgrading. Crests are more specialized and are used for specific item level upgrades. Crests are a key element of the Dragonflight gear progression system, which was introduced in 10.1, and come in 4 ranks.

The first thing to be aware of is that crests can only be used to purchase equipment that is of a particular rank, and that every rank has different requirements for upgrading. The simplest and easiest upgrade costs 15 crests. The most complex upgrade could require as much as 20 crests, depending on the kind of gear being upgraded.

Players can obtain crests by working through content that is of the appropriate level, whether that means walking around and doing outdoor activities for gear of lower tiers, dungeons or raids of any difficulty for higher-tier items or Mythic+ heroic raid bosses or dungeons to obtain endgame gear. The crests can then be exchanged with an item upgrader like Cuzolth or Vaskarn in Valdrakken to upgrade items the item in the proper steps and paths.

The use of these currencies isn't that difficult however, the system does introduce some modifications to the upgrade process. Once a piece of gear reaches the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer or Adventurer) it no longer requires Flightstones. This allows players to upgrade their equipment to the highest possible ilvl on all of their characters rather than relying on seasonal loot.

It's also crucial to choose crests with care, since they are only used for one purpose. It's best to use your Whelpling-rank Crests on the highest-quality gear you can find and keep Drake and Wyrm Crests for the next set of upgrades. This is particularly applicable to rings and trinkets that take up multiple slots on the character, that will be able to avail the discount for all accounts when all slots are filled with top-quality equipment.
