Upgrades can boost the stats of a piece of equipment and, sometimes, even add extras. The worth of these upgrades is determined by their tiers, requirements, and the number of random augmentations that are applied.
For example, the elite racial shield Razortail is usually upgraded to improve its lightning absorb capability in PvP, or to add additional defenses on missile based builds in PvM. This makes it more tradeable than the non-upgraded perfect version.
Reroll Tokens
Reroll tokens can be used to reroll a purchased item, such as an armor, weapon or rings. The item is replaced with an identical item however with different bonuses. Reroll tokens can be a cost-effective option to upgrade equipment. However, they don't retain the level of the original item, and any wasted resources will not be refunded.

Leveling

A perfectly rolled 200/6500 armor set piece, for instance is highly coveted by the melee PvP communities and could be worth up to 20-50 times the value of an unupp'd counterpart.
The game will show you the requirements once you choose the upgrade component that is incorporated into the item. These include the item type (either Armor or Weapon), the level of the item as well as the upgrade Token required, as well as the amount of progress needed to complete the upgrade.
