Upgrades can increase the value of armors, weapons and rings. They also boost extra bonuses like damage from PvE and crit chance.

The cost of upgrading an item is determined by the item's level. The cost increases as the item level rises.

Components

Upgrade components are items that can be put into armor, weapons and trinkets in order to provide an additional stat boost or effect when they're used. These can be obtained through crafting, buying from vendors trading, or looting. Certain upgrades have unique cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can be inserted into equipment with a slot for them. The item level upgrade must be at a minimum upgraded to blue level to allow a component to be applied. Like other mods, upgrade components can only be used one time; they cannot be applied repeatedly or replaced with new upgrades. Infusions and enrichments are a type of upgrade component used to upgrade non-amulet legendary or Ascended equipment, as well other items that are not ascended. Infusions and Enrichments can be obtained by salvaging equipment from the ascended state or completing a mission in the Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall campaigns.

A prefix or suffix may be added to an upgrade, which alters the name of the item it is applied to (for example, 'Canthan Armor Insignia,' becomes Canthan Armor Minor Vigor). Each level of an item requires different components, and upgrade costs increase with each level.

Certain upgrades require a certain ingredient to activate. This ingredient is obtained by finishing Upgrade Recipes. These recipes can be purchased from NPCs or found on the upgrade tab of a crafting table. Each completed Upgrade Recipe yields several Technology Points. These points can be used for leveling up an item. When enough points have been earned you will be able to claim the upgrade and get its extra bonuses.

When an individual player improves a piece of equipment the original item will be replaced with the new item. The same armor will receive the form of a weapon or shield when upgraded. The new item comes with its own bonus. This can be a disadvantage in that it could make the item more expensive if you don't require it.

If the player has enough tokens, they can roll item upgrades. This causes the item to be traded for a new one, with the level 1 base, and a totally different set of bonus bonuses. This is a good option for some items, but it shouldn't be repeated often, as it can waste a lot of resources.

Some upgrades can be rerolled several times to increase their value, giving players the ability to alter their gear. Dolphin's Gift is a good example, since it grants a buff if the player continuously enters or leaves the water. The item can be upgraded many times, increasing the maximum roll every time by 10 increments.
