The item upgrade (have a peek here) allows players to boost an item's gear rating up 700 points, and then add a final bonus. Items can be upgraded by keeping them in inventory and heading to the kiln.

Certain items are worth upgrading because of their distinctive stats. (For instance an excellently rolled breakpoint armor used in melee PvP). Other items such as weapons don't change much after an upgrade and aren't worth the cost.

Weapons

Weapons can be upgraded to improve their numeric stats like the chance to crit, attack damage, PvE and PvP damage. Weapons also come with a flat bonus that increases the damage they deal per second. The cost of upgrading a weapon varies on its rarity and level. For instance, a +2 weapon requires two standard Smithing Stones while a+3 requires four. The number of stones needed to upgrade a weapon will continue increase until it requires an upgrade to a higher level of Smithing Stones, at which the amount will be reset to one.

Upgrades to weapons also alter the stats of the base. This is usually a positive thing, but it can also have negative consequences. Upgrades can make items unusable, unless you are very lucky.

Armor items can be upgraded to increase their effectiveness. In the case of chests or helms it will boost its defense base while a belt and gloves will increase their strength and dexterity. Armor has a rerolling feature for its Enhanced Defense percent. This means that it is able to reroll down to a lower value.

The upgrade template for a weapon displays the new stats it will gain upon upgrading and their respective values. This means that the weapon will gain 3% attack damage if it is upgraded from an 8 attack damage sword to an 11 attack damage sword. The 3% doesn't mean that the weapon will strike 3 times less, as it is an absolute number.

A weapon can also be rerolled by pressing the green button with circling arrows in the item menu. This will reroll an item upgrader mod and alter its stats but not reset the weapon's levels, or bind it to account status.

Armor

A few upgrades to your armor can make the world of difference to your survivability. Certain sets can offer massive improvements in the resistance to poison, curses, fire, and magic. This can make it easier to navigate difficult terrains. The more defense your character has the more value you will get from every point of health, so it's important to improve your armor as much as you can.

You can upgrade your armor by visiting one of the Great Fairy Fountains. There are four Great Fairy Fountains within the game and in order to unlock each one you must complete an additional quest that involves the Stable Trotters. Once you've completed the main quest, and the corresponding fountains, you'll have the option of talking to any Great Fairy in order to unlock the menu for upgrading armor.

Each piece of armor can be upgraded to three levels and the amount of materials and Rupees needed for each will vary. In general, you'll need at anything from three to ten Red Chuchu Jellies and 10 Rupees for the first upgrade, and anywhere between five Rubies and ten Fire-Breath Lizalfos Horns for each subsequent one. For instance the Champion Leathers can be upgraded to +5 defense, allowing you to keep up with a good-sized group of adversaries in most cold climates and the Snowquill Headdress can be upgraded all the way to +20 defense, giving you enough protection to withstand an entire raid with a few of your friends.

You can't upgrade armor the same as weapons. If you're playing as a Warrior, you should focus on upgrading your armor to increase physical power or the power of spells. You should also save your armor upgrades to upgrade the armor you'll still be wearing at the end of the story, such as the Ring of Lightning, Spectral Shield or the mask you wear in the final boss fight the Monter Parts Merchant Mask.

You can also get some benefits to your armor by presenting the jeweler in Gerudo Town 10 Twinkling Titanite. It is generally recommended to save these upgrades to the weapon you'll be using to beat the game. For instance, the Longsword or Battleaxe.
