There are some issues however, which prevent them from being our top option. One of the weaknesses of the Q5 is that its navigation system doesn't feature AI-powered obstacles avoidance. It's therefore prone to getting stuck on shoes and socks and could not navigate rooms with lots of people efficiently during our tests. It also doesn't come with a camera that would let it see the corners of a room.

It's still a great deal particularly if your home or office has a lot of unfinished floors and you want to save money. It's also quiet and works when you're at work or in school. It lacks the edge-to-edge bare floor vacuuming that is offered in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective when it comes to mopping. It relies on disposable wet wipes that don't stick well and aren't able to deal with dried-on debris. The Q5 has a self-emptying dock, though. And, if you need to, you can switch the mopping pad to dry ones in just a few just a few seconds.

2. IRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive mopping and vacuuming into an elegant, compact package. It's the most efficient robotic hoover for carpets but it falls behind some competitors in terms of deep cleaning.

The app allows you to customize zones and change the cleaning schedule. It has a battery lifespan that is similar to other models.

If the X30 Ultra is in a carpeted space, you can tell it to pull back and extend its mop. This will help prevent cross-contamination. Its flex arm can also be used to reach under furniture that is low and along baseboards. It's not as effective on the washboard as our other Editors' Choice Picks, the Ecovacs Ozmo N8Pro+ and the iRobot Combo j9+.

In the course of testing, X30 Ultra was the fastest robot vacuum/mop to sweep the entire house, with 66 per cent of its battery remaining. Its obstacle detection was top notch, and it nimbly avoided fake dog socks, turds and cables.

It's a little more expensive than iRobot Combo v9+ or iRobot Roomba j9+ but it has superior suction and an onboard bin that automatically empty into the base. It also supports voice commands using Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It even cleans the floor after it vacuums this feature, which we haven't seen in other robot vacuum/mop combos.

3. iRobot Roomba X40

This mop and vacuum combination is sleek and has a circular design that appears more like a regular Roomba model than the bulky models of the competitors. It's among our most appealing looking robot vacuums. The latest model from iRobot is also the most intelligent. It features advanced features, like Enhanced Dirt Detection and future compatibility (another company's robot that is able to wash mop pads on its own).

It's the only robot vacuum/mop that scored 100% in our evaluations, thanks to a combination of high-tech sensors, including a camera, structured light system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could fill and empty its basestation in a self-contained manner. It also boasted an industry-leading suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mop mops.

Like other iRobot models as well, the X40 is user-friendly, with an intuitive mobile app interface and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Google Assistant. The only issue is that it's still quite an eerily noisy device, which can be a problem if you run it in the morning prior to work or at night as you try to fall asleep.

It's also a bit costly, but not as much as the Ecovacs MaxV Ultra or Roborock S8 Omni, which are equally powerful and more attractive. This is a two-in-one vacuum that's extremely powerful however it's going to cost you more and create more noise.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is the top-of-the line robot cleaner with mop vacuum and mop. It has a number of advanced features that make you forget about your chores. Similar to Ecovacs range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-off cleaning machine that can take charge of both mopping and vacuuming, with a multifunction dock that automatically empty the vacuum's trash bin, refills its water tank, washes and dry the mop pads.

The smart robot makes use of LIDAR and structured lighting to create floor plans and spot obstacles. It can navigate more efficiently than its premium competitors. If you have a bigger home, you should consider choosing a model that has zones or spot cleaning modes. This lets you tell the robot which area of your home must be cleaned with the help of an app or voice command. If you have furniture, a stairway mode is also a good option. Finally a recharge and resume function that lets your robot vacuum pick up right where it left off is great for busy families.

5. iRobot Roomba RX3

The RX3 is a smarter cleaner than you might imagine from its price. It has a great vacuuming performance and picked up 55% debris in our tests. (It was second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mopses using only one pad and a reciprocating motion that cleans better that most of the robot mop cleaners that we've tried. And it's highly self-sufficient with a full-featured application and an auto-emptying washable base.

The iRobot app is designed to help you navigate the mapping process, which gathers information on your floorplan and any "no go" areas that you've marked on the map. It can be used to design cleaning schedules or create an automatic vacuum cleaner spot-clean. It can also be used to it to rank your most filthy areas for better performance. The app also grants access to a host of features, such as seasonal suggestions, custom maps and advanced settings for your cleaning.

It also has the ability to reach corners and under furniture more easily because its shape is more rectangular. It also has a powerful suction of 8,000 Pascal suction and intelligent combs for hair of pets. And you can set up a spot clean that scours a specific area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a more sleek and more affordable alternative to the iRobot Roomba. It's more appealing, Dolce & Gabbana-esque design and its twin cameras resemble cute eyes. It is capable of vacuuming, but it is more susceptible to getting caught on low thresholds and is a bit louder than the other top robotic vacuums we've tested. It also comes with an app that's less intuitive, and a smaller base station that can't double as a bin for emptying.
