WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades can give you boost in certain statistics. Each upgrade boosts the level of an item upgrading by 3. A random substat is also boosted alongside every upgrade.

The upgraded gear is usually more valuable, unless it has low requirements by nature (like FB sorc shields) or has a large variance in stats (like the eth Titan weapons). Upgrades are less valuable for those with higher variance due to the need to roll an exact version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader enables players to upgrade gear to a higher item level by providing the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of weapon or armor. The item used to upgrade the item will be consumed and can't be used again. Upgrades can be applied to the enchantments.

You can upgrade your gear anytime by visiting the upgrader in any major city. It is recommended to visit the upgrader at least once every few weeks, to keep your equipment up-to-date.

Upgrades will cost more depending on the item level, but they will always be cheaper than purchasing new equipment. For example, upgrading a Benthic chest piece to 385 levels will cost 20 recycle points while buying a similar item level upgrade (official website) from a different player will cost 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are useful items that are used to upgrade weapons and tools, armor and accessories. They can be purchased by players from NPCs that sell upgrades to items in exchange for various currencies, and can be found in random treasure lists. Once an upgrade has been purchased it can be used on any weapon or tool with an button, which will display a preview of the item when it is upgraded in the event that the player has enough materials.

Upgrade costs vary depending on the slot for the item and the current item level. For example weapons are more expensive than gloves, bracers, or bracers. Each upgrade cost 15 Flightstones and a number of crests, with some upgrades offering discounts to lower the cost of the Flightstones or crests that are used. Once an item upgrading has been upgraded to a certain level, it can be downgraded and sold to the upgrader for a lower price.

Item upgraders can be found in many places on the main island and some outposts. The NPCs offer an upgrade coupon and a possibility of obtaining the latest recipe. The upgrade discount increases when more items are upgraded. It can be increased by having players finish certain achievements or quests.

Unlike Cromwell in Baldur's Gate II, there is no upgrader for items in the beginning of Icewind Dale. Instead, the NPCs that are available to facilitate upgrades require several methods, which is both an improvement but also a drawback.

In Season 3, several new features were added to the upgrade system. After a player has upgraded to a specific level for an armor slot, upgrading other items to the same item level, will cost less. This is even if those items are from a different set of equipment.

The amount of Valorstones needed for upgrades is decreased, and the discount is affixed to all accounts. Similarly, the amount of Harbinger Crests required for upgrades is also cut and is not available until players reach certain milestones in their achievement.

Crests

Players have a variety of options for upgrading their gear in WoW. Flightstones are a currency that is available to everyone who wants to upgrade. Crests are more specific and are utilized during specific item upgrade level upgrades. Crests are an essential part of the Dragonflight gear progression system introduced in 10.1, and come in four ranks.

The first thing to remember is that Crests are only available to equipment that is with a certain rank. Each rank has a different upgrade path. The most basic and straightforward upgrade process costs just 15 crests while the most complex requires as many as 20 crests, based on the type of equipment that is being upgraded.

Players can earn crests by finishing content at the appropriate level, whether that involves walking around and performing outdoor activities to get lower-tier gear, raids or dungeons of all difficulties for higher-tier items or Mythic+ heroic raid bosses and dungeons for endgame gear. Crests can be exchanged at an upgrader NPC, like Cuzolth in Dornogal or Vaskarn in Valdrakken to obtain the appropriate upgrade pathways and steps.

The use of these currencies isn't too difficult, but the system will introduce a few changes to the overall upgrade process. Once a piece of gear reaches the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer or Adventurer), it no longer requires Flightstones. This is to allow players to get their gear up to the highest possible ilvl on all their characters instead of relying on seasonal loot.

Another notable modification is that crests have one usage therefore it's essential to use them wisely. It's best to use your Whelpling-rank crests on the best gear that you can find, and save Drake and Wyrm Crests for the next round of upgrades. This is especially relevant for items like rings and trinkets that occupy several slots. The discount for the entire account will only apply when all the slots on the character are filled with top-quality equipment.
