WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades provide a guaranteed boost to certain stats. Each upgrade boosts the item level by +3. A random additional substat is also boosted alongside every upgrade.

The more modernized gear generally has a higher trade value regardless of whether it has low requirements (like the FB shield of the sorc) or very high stat variation (like Eth titan weapons). The latter see less value from upgrading due to the necessity to roll for a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader allows players to upgrade gear to a higher level by providing the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of weapon or armor. However, the item that is used for the upgrade will remain in use for a long time and can't be used again. Upgrades can also be applied to enhancements.

The upgrader can be found in all major cities, and is accessible anytime to upgrade your equipment. It is recommended to visit the upgrader every couple of weeks to keep your equipment up to date.

Upgrades will cost more depending on the level of the item level upgrade (go here) but they will always be cheaper than buying new gear. Upgrades such as upgrading a Benthic chest to 385 ilvl will cost you 20 recycle points. A similar item upgrader kit will cost you 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are functional items which can be used to level up weapons and tools, armor and other accessories. They can be purchased from NPCs of item upgraders for various currencies. They can also find them on random treasure lists. Once an upgrade has been purchased it can be applied to any weapon or tool using an button, which will show an item's preview at its next upgrade level when the player has enough materials.

The upgrade items cost depends on the item upgrading slot and current item level and the weapon's price is higher than bracers or gloves, for example. Each upgrade cost 15 Flightstones plus a certain number of crests. Some upgrades offer a discount on the Flightstones. Once an item upgrading has been upgraded to a certain level, it can be downgraded and sold to the upgrader at a lower cost.

A lot of locations offer upgraders for items which include the main island and some outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade coupon and a possibility of obtaining the latest recipe. The discount on upgrades increases when more items are upgraded. It can be increased by having players complete certain achievements or complete quests.

Unlike Cromwell in Baldur's Gate II is no upgrader for items available in the beginning of Icewind Dale. Instead the NPCs that are available to facilitate upgrades must be acquired through various methods which is both an improvement and a drawback.

In Season 3, a number of new features were added to the upgrade system. After an upgrade has been completed to a certain level of item for an armor slot, upgrading other items to the same level will cost less. This applies even if those items are from a different set of equipment.

The discount is applicable to all accounts. The amount of Harbinger Crests required for upgrades is reduced too, but it is only available after certain milestones are achieved.

Crests

When upgrading equipment in WoW players have a couple of choices. Flightstones are an option that is accessible to all players for upgrading. Crests are more specialized and are used for specific item level upgrades. Crests are an essential part of the Dragonflight gear progression system, which was introduced in 10.1, and come in four ranks.

The first thing to remember is that Crests are only available to equipment that is of a certain rank. Each rank comes with distinct upgrade paths. The simplest and easiest upgrade is 15 crests. The most complex upgrade requires up to 20 crests, based on the type or gear that is being upgraded.

Players can earn crests through completing content of the appropriate level, which involves walking around and engaging in outdoor activities to get lower-tier gear, raids or dungeons of all difficulties for higher-tier items, or Mythic+ heroic raid bosses or dungeons for endgame gear. These crests can then be exchanged at an item upgrader NPC, like Cuzolth in Dornogal, or Vaskarn in Valdrakken to get the appropriate upgrade routes and steps.

Utilizing these new currencies isn't too complicated however, the system introduces some modifications to the upgrade process. For example, once an item reaches the highest level of upgrading for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic) it will no longer require Flightstones to be upgraded. This change allows players to upgrade their gear to the highest level possible on all of their characters, instead of relying on seasonal loot.

It's also essential to use crests wisely, as they have only one purpose. It's best to use your Whelpling-rank Crests on the top-quality equipment that you can find, and save Drake and Wyrm Crests to be used for the next set of upgrades. This is especially applicable to rings and trinkets that fill multiple slots on the character, which can only be eligible to avail the discount for all accounts when all slots are full of high-quality equipment.
