Peritoneal mesothelioma symptoms may appear similar to other conditions and can be mistaken for a hernia, gastrointestinal issues like colitis or Crohn's disease, or other types of abdominal cancer. Because of this, many patients don't report their exposure to asbestos and they don't seek medical care. When mesothelioma is detected experts may suggest a biopsy for a more precise diagnosis. A biopsy is the process of removing just a small portion of affected tissue to test. This procedure can help determine the stage of mesothelioma as well as if it is epithelioid, biphasic or sarcomatoid.

If mesothelioma isn't spreading it is possible to remove the tumors. They can also provide an effective treatment. The doctor can also determine whether the cancer has expanded to the abdomen. They may then recommend palliative treatments for the patient, such as paracentesis that drains fluid from the abdomen.

The outlook for patients is worse when a mesothelioma has progressed. The tumors may become resistant to treatment and may recur. The doctor may suggest a combination of surgery and chemotherapy. Surgery options include cytoreduction with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemo. This combination is more likely to improve a patient's prognosis than merely chemotherapy alone.
