Item upgrades are a way to increase the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade it could increase an item's Mark Level or Rarity and boost additional stats.

Each item has a track to upgrade it. Each upgrade increases the cost of the following one by a certain amount.

Item Level

When an item gets upgraded, its stats are increased in value. This is the sum of an item's upgraded perks (attack magic attack and defense). On PC, you can check the level of the item using ALT, or by using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will show the item's full description, including the ilvl. You can also find it by hovering over an item and typing /itemlevel into chat.

There are various theories about how the calculation of the item's level is done. One theory says that the item level is determined by formulas that determine the worth of an item's stats actually are. It is based on the fact that different perks are valued differently, and that gems in the sockets boost the value of the item. This could result in an item's ilvl which is calculated and is usually very close to Blizzard's actual item level.

Item Stats

Stats on an item are a significant component of what makes or breaks an item for players. The game uses them in many ways to encourage players not to limit themselves to one weapon and to motivate players to explore other weapons. The base stats on a weapon are increased by the weapon's stat mods that are in turn increased by the player's skill.

The possible ranges of stats for an item are determined by the item level, but all items are guaranteed to have at least one stat within the specified range, unless it's an exclusive item or the result of a God roll from a boss of a raid.

Another thing that could change is the option to upgrade item equipment without having to reroll attaches, or select which stats to increase. However, as with the base equipment, this would have to be performed on a per-item basis, and the interface for item comparison would not display all the possible stats that were gained or lost at the same time.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player stacks up to increase the chances of finding items as well as the properties that appear on loot drops and the strength of the properties. However, it does not directly impact damage or the ability to upgrade item items. It merely gives players a chance to upgrade their equipment in earlier waves, and is therefore more valuable in the early game than in later ones, as most players prioritize greater weapon scaling and defense over the raw damage gain.

In addition to influencing the discovery of items, Luck also increases the chances of being successful when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith’s overall chances of upgrading that increase with each item level. They can also be increased with the use of anti-materials such as a Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.

The shields, armor, and weapons have the default Luck value of 40. These items can be augmented with golden ingots, or spined leather (depending on their material type) to add another 40 luck or to increase an item's existing Luck up to 140.

Additionally there are certain items, like the Hollow weapon that is infused with hollow can be used to increase the damage of any damage-dealing skill by 5%. These items can be found in the shop or crafted by using the appropriate ingredients.

Item Failure

Upgrades to items can be expensive and not all upgrades will succeed. However, there are some cash shop items that allow players to increase their chance of success or stop themselves from losing an item in the event that the upgrade fails.

When you upgrade an item the success rate is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage indicates the probability of successfully upgrading the item. This can be increased by using Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limitations on how much the success rates can be improved, and the overall chance of a failed upgrade cannot exceed 100%..

The success of an upgrades is also influenced by the Luck of that item. Every item has a base success rate of 25% and every item that has Luck increases the chance of success by five percent.

The upgrade overlays for items are rendered above items in the inventory. This can cause obscurity to enchantment effects or other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
